WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO STORE POTATOES?
Warnez does its best to supply the highest quality potatoes to the retail sector and consumers.
We are happy to give you a few important tips so that you can check the potatoes yourself.
When potatoes are stored in the light for too long, the potato tubers can turn green. The stronger the light, the faster the potatoes turn green. These green areas contain higher concentrations of solanine (a natural toxin), so it is advisable to cut out these areas.
Suckers or shoots:
If potatoes are stored too long, suckers or sprouts develop. These make the potato tough and lower the vitamin C level. These suckers or shoots are not desired for consumption.
Like humans, potatoes can develop bruises, so potatoes need to be handled carefully. But these bruises are not detrimental to your health nor do they detract from the taste. When cooked, these areas will turn brown, making the potatoes look less appetizing.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR WHEN PURCHASING POTATOES
Here are a few tips for preserving the nutrients and flavour of the potatoes.
The quality of the potatoes can also be maintained optimally at home.
Optimal storage of chips potatoes:
- The ideal temperature for storing chips potatoes is 7-8°C.
- If stored too cool, the starch will be converted into sugar, giving the chips a brown tinge.
- The ideal temperature for storing potatoes is 2-7°C.
- You can store them up to 1 month in your fridge without them starting to sprout or rot.
Tip: Try eating your potatoes with the peel! By boiling them with the peel on, they lose less vitamins, minerals and taste. By boiling potatoes in broth, you can boost their taste.
